SHAPPS PHOTOGRAPHY

I live this picture because the colors are very bright and attractive. I have seen a Listerine pack and anchovies a million times before but never in this light. The objects in this picture look very vibrant and fun. The shadows also add fun to the picture as it is obvious that they are not real. The fact that the both objects are almost the same in size and are placed next to each other gives a sense of balance to the photograph.

This image is very elegant and beautiful. I like the natural curves that are being formed by the tendrils of the pumpkin. I specially like the swirls that go around the stem. This photograph itself takes the point of view of a graphic designer. It is very playful and the element can be confused as a man made object.

I chose this photograph because I work near the Fulton Fish Market. This market is extremely smelly and I am very glad that it has moved to the Bronx. This image is extremely funny because the owners should've really considered adding something to reduce the smell of the place. The photographer added humor and brought to life the thoughts of those who walked near the smelly area. The client chose to have a composite image of the site because it adds exaggerated humor to real life. Also, never in a million years was there ever going to be a huge car freshener in front of the fish market. It is a good image for a good laugh.

The time of day of this photo is what makes the image. If it were day time, he would've not been able to capture the dramatic look of the moon peeking through the tall trees. Also, the moonlight allows the trees in front to be very dark and very mysterious. The photographer plays with positive and negative due to the effect of the lighting and the darkness of the sky.

INTERESTS OF A COLLEGE STUDENT

Several things that college students notice are:

1. Fashion
2. Public Transportation (since we’re always traveling to and from school)
3. Other college students
4. Fast food stands/restaurants (since we’re always looking for something to eat before and/or after class)
5. Cars (since we very often get tired of public transportation)
6. Technology (i.e. cell phones, iPods and other small gadgets)

These are some examples of objects that I was looking for when I was doing the role-playing photography assignment.

FAVORITE COLLEGE STUDENT PICTURE

I like this picture because it I feel it symbolically represents a college student. We are in school to develop our skills and land a well paid position in the business world. At this time in our lives we are still open to many careers. Our future and what we do with ourselves is in our hands. Success is attainable but it takes hard work. It is almost as if the person in the picture is looking out and seeing the opportunities that are out there. He is thinking still while the rest of the world is moving. As far as composition, I like the contrast between the subject (who is dressed in a dark color) against the rest of the image. I like the fact that he is giving us his back because it gives the photo a more mysterious feel and I also the fact that the subject is the only object that is in focus.

NICHOLAS EVELEIGH PHOTOGRAPHY

Description of image: Six different color icicles placed on a white background. Three are lying horizontally and three are lying vertically. It is the first image of Folio 1.

I enjoyed looking through Don Dixon’s page because I also like shooting still life images. Out of the many on his page I liked the one with the icicles. All of the icicles are different colors and I like the colors that appear in the sections where they overlap. I like the contrast between the white background and the colors of the ice creams. I like the repetition of the lines. Lastly, I like the typography that is printed on the wrapper of the icicles. Though the type is set in white, it is clearly visible.

MY FAVORITE PICTURE

I took this hot in the summer in the Chelsea area of NYC. This is my favorite picture because it captures New York City in its essence. It is impossible to find parking because most places have “No Parking” sings in front as we see in this image. New York City is also filled with graffiti art. I like the contrast between the organic graffiti shapes versus the inorganic box in the middle of the gate. I like the difference in the lettering. The letters in the yellow box are very solid and straight. The letters written in graffiti are very curvy. I also like to difference in color and think that it makes this gate very interesting.

BERENICE ABBOTT PHOTOGRAPHY

This image was taken in Herald Square; 34th Street and Broadway on July 16, 1936. It captures New York City because it shows the cars that were used during that era. If you read a little deeper into the matter you can see that traffic was not bad in 1936. That is clearly not the case with today’s traffic in Herald Square. The pedestrians clothes are highly visible and it is obvious that fashion has changed immensely. The retail stores and their awnings are visible. Before, and as seen in this picture, the awnings were more text-heavy, as oppose to today’s simple designed awnings. In all, this image captures NYC during the 1930’s because it demonstrates people, vehicles, cars and retail stores, all which have modernized since then.

I chose this image because I think the photographer did a good job in transforming the human legs into indescribable objects. I like the various shades of gray that compose the image and the lights that create the highlights. At first, it was difficult to see that it was a photograph of two human legs. I didn’t know what to think. I really like the dark shadows that form underneath the right bottom right leg and the top of the left because they ad high contrast to the image.
